INCOMING STUDENTS

I am so excited to be working with you this year. If you are anywhere near as excited as I am, well, I just don't know what may happen. I plan on having a great year, and I hope you have similar plans. If we make up our minds now to do so, we could have a record-breaking year, making it harder for any future class to do any better. I can see that happening; what about you?

What is MITA?

Microsoft IT Academy, or MITA, is an offering of Microsoft that, through a relationship with NC schools, offers two courses in Microsoft Office 10 statewide. The courses are listed as A and B, with A teaching Word, PowerPoint and Publisher and B teaching Excel and Access. Through a relationship with Certiport, schools can offer certification testing for Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access along with the courses. We believe that this is a wonderful benefit to our students because they will have expertise in the most current Microsoft Office software suite to use throughout their high school education and certifications to add to their resume and/or college applications, helping them stand out from other applicants.

You may hear that other high schools in Gaston County offer these two courses solely to Juniors and Seniors. These courses require a level of maturity above the average high school freshmen, as they were actually written for college students and adults. However, the skills offered in these courses are necessary throughout Highland curriculi and so are required early. We find that our freshmen generally have a high level of maturity and believe that they, with our help and your support, will do well.

PARENTS

Please feel free to visit our Web Classroom at any time. Look for updates daily, including assignments, a calendar of important events and due dates, and other pertinent information. A list of links to various areas is on the resources page, with a section devoted to parents. Your student should be able to assist you with any questions you may have, and can show you their Portfolio Product and quiz grades as often as you like during the semester. You may always contact me via email (cmmcmahan@gaston.k12.nc.us) or phone (704-810-8816) with any questions or requests for additional information.

And, a personal aside; thank you so much for the interest you take in your student's education. Your support of Highland and our students and staff is much appreciated. It is in large part because of our parents that we can honestly say we are "Simply the Best".
