 English 9 Course Description

Students in English 9 will integrate and augment the language arts skills acquired throughout their educations to explore, analyze, and create a variety of texts. All lessons are developed to comply with the Common Core standards for English 9.

This course will cover a survey of literature from the American, British, and World Literature canons, organized into unit plans as listed below. Each day includes instruction in vocabulary, grammar, and literature. Students will study (1) Fiction:  Short Stories, (2) Nonfiction:  Essays and Speeches, (3) Poetry:  Short Poems, (4) Mythology & The Odyssey, (5) Fiction: Novels (Fahrenheit 451, Animal Farm, and/or The Pearl), (6) Drama:  Romeo and Juliet, and (7) EOC Review/Exams. Most units will include more than one major assignment.

 Grading Policy & Guidelines

Because grades are intended to be an accurate reflection of achievement, students will be given ample opportunity to demonstrate understanding of course material. Report cards are issued every six weeks, with interim reports issued mid-way through each period. Averages are calculated as follows: 50% major grades (tests), 30% minor grades (quizzes), and 20% miscellaneous (homework).

Late assignments will be penalized 10 points per day, up to 30 points. If an assignment is not received on the due date, a student has two weeks to make it up during the first grading period, five days to make it up during the second grading period, and three days to make it up during the third grading period.

Tests and quizzes must be made up after school within two weeks. In compliance with county policy, any student who makes below an 85 on a test grade is eligible to retest for a maximum grade of 85 provided he or she attends an after school tutoring session before retesting. Tutoring is available after school Monday through Thursday until 4:15 pm.

All work must be legible and neat. Only very dark blue or black ink is acceptable. No work will be accepted on torn-out pages. Use proper paper! Students are expected to put their full name and class identification number on every assignment. All assignments are due at the beginning of class.

 Supplies & Materials

Students are expected to have a 4GB (or larger) flash drive, #2 pencil, black pen, and college-ruled paper at all times. For this class, the following supplies are recommended: a two-pocket folder, a college-ruled composition book, a binder, eight divider tabs (vocabulary, grammar, fiction, nonfiction, short poems, drama, novels, mythology). A textbook will not be distributed. Since a copy of the book is in the classroom and other resources are available online at Mrs. Comer's LiveBinder, students are not expected to carry books every day.
